After two years of regular trips to Spain, I have noticed a strange change in my behavior – I have started to stop and talk to people. Its gotten to the stage, that as soon as I see someone with a guidebook or map at the airport or on the plane, I go up and speak to them. I then come to the realization, that a 3-hour flight is just not enough time to describe all of the places in Spain that are worth visiting, but which the average European knows little, or nothing about. Most are only really aware of the southern coast, or know a little about Andalusia, Barcelona or Madrid, whilst I tell them all about places called Cantabria, Asturias or Extremadura. I guess that makes me a somewhat tiresome travel companion.
I have been travelling around Spain for 2 years and try to get to different places – the fewer tourists the better. In my opinion, in every place there’s always something worth seeing, but there are definitely those which are often underrated but without which Spain would just not be Spain. These, in my mind, are a must-see. I try not to talk too much, as pictures speak louder than words and that’s why I take photos.
So without further adieu, lets go to the North of Spain and this time, some summer photos from Cantabria. Suances is a small sea-side town filled with Spanish tourists in the summer, but almost empty off-season. Just before or after the holiday season, you can easily find a great room in a “casa rural” (guesthouse) at excellent prices. Of course, the weather sometimes surprises you, but there are lots of places for walking or for grabbing a cup of tea… or a glass of wine. The views are beautiful and the wide, sandy beaches attract not only sunbathers, but surfers alike. The northern coast of Spain impresses me the most – beaches, cliffs, green countryside, mountains… You can enjoy contact with nature and relax. Pastures are filled with sheep & cattle abound. The beautiful sunsets take your breath away. These are the kind of places to which you really want to just keep coming back. Maybe a good place to retire?
These pictures where taken in Suances in July. We managed to get a nice tan whilst getting wet at the same time. Watch this blog for more pictures of summer and winter pictures of Cantabria.
